India Has Many Women Who Are Sharing Their Husband With Another Woman

NEW DELHI: Just released census data shows that there are about 6.6 million more women who are "currently married" than men. While part of this might be accounted for by married men who have migrated abroad for work leaving their wives behind, the data also indicates that there are a very large number of women in polygamous marriages.

The data also shows that in 2011, the census year, more than 18 lakh girls under the age of 15 were married. Of the total 1.2 billion population about 580 million were married at the time of the census. This number does not include those divorced, widowed or separated. Among these 580 million married persons, 293 million were women while 287 million were men. A state-wise comparison of married women and men shows the migration effect. For instance, Kerala has the highest skew with 1.13 married women for every married man. It is followed by Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, where this ratio ranges from 1.04 to 1.07. These are all states with high outflows of migrant workers. On the flip side of this, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Delhi, states known for a high influx of migrant labour, have more married men than women.

Another male-female skew is in the proportions of the two genders married in different age groups. In the 20-24 year group, about 69% of women were married while just over 30% of men of this age were married. The difference between proportion of married men and women to the total population of an age group gradually decreases after 24 years of age.

Of the 18 lakh under-15 married girls, more than 4.5 lakh had also witnessed child birth. About 3 lakh under-15 mothers had two children at the time of the census. Of the total 7.8 lakh children born to girls below 15 years of age, about 56,000 had already died. Thus, there were a large number of girls who before the tender age of 15 had got married, delivered babies and also seen their child die.

Rajasthan had the highest proportion of girls aged 10-14 married. Of 40 lakh girls of this age in the state, a little over 4% were married. Rajasthan was followed by Maharashtra, Goa and Gujarat, all having more than 3% of girls aged 10-14 being married at the time of the census.

Can a modern day career girl have 'dreams'

New Delhi, Jan.18 (ANI): This interesting novel is focused on the experience of a young girl who wants to make a mark in her career, and hopes to get married to a person of her choice.

As depicted in Hindi films, she looks forward to falling in love with a person of her choice and getting married.

But it does not turn out that way. Once she attains 'marriageable age', her parents look for a boy, and conclude an 'arranged marriage'. She cannot say no to her parents, as it would disturb the peace in her house.

Meet the woman who gave birth to baby just hour after learning about pregnancy

A woman recently gave birth to a baby girl just an hour after learning about her pregnancy, it has been reported.

Katherine Kropas had no idea she was pregnant with a 10-pound baby until an hour before she gave birth, ABC News reported.

The 23-year-old had few intense back pains, but at first, doctors couldn't find anything wrong with her, so they did an ultrasound and after looking at the report they rushed her off into the labor.

Kropas told WCVB she felt that she'd put on some weight, but figured maybe it was just typical holiday weight gain.

Dr. Jennifer Ashton, a senior medical contributor for ABC News and practicing OB/GYN, said she's seen cases like Kropas's in her career and it tends to happen in women who are overweight or obese to start, might have irregular periods and are less aware of their bodies.

It represents a missed opportunity for prenatal care for the baby, which was definitely not ideal, she further added. (ANI)

Women artists take over Seattle Art Museum

SEATTLE (AP) — Inspired by the Pompidou Center in Paris, which for nearly two years removed all the men's art from their modern galleries, the Seattle Art Museum is letting women take over its downtown building this fall.

Lovers of art by men can still get their fill in the museum's Renaissance, Asian and Native art galleries, but those who want to explore art from this past century will be studying the contribution of women to photography, video, painting and sculpture.

Can you believe these ladies are over 40?

Can you believe these ladies are over 40?
Time was when actresses were expected to have swapped their greasepaint for aprons by the time they turned 40 and settle down to playing mothers on-screen and off it. Thankfully, we've left those dark ages behind. Take inspiration (or look and weep!) from this roll call of celebrities who have looked 40 squarely in the face and stared it down. Sridevi, Madhuri, JLo, Halle and gang prove that age is truly no bar now.
Just when we thought she had settled for a quiet life of domesticity with husband Boney Kapoor and her two daughters, Sridevi stunned us with her comeback film English Vinglish which fetched her a standing ovation at the Toronto Film Festival. At 49, Sridevi looks even better than she did when she was in her prime as an actress.

11 Bus routes for women to be flagged off tomorrow

NEW DELHI: The Delhi government has yet again woken up to the need for special buses for women on busy routes during peak hours. Starting Thursday, 11 new routes connecting all major office and market complexes with residential colonies is scheduled to be flagged off by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

This is the government's third attempt to start the special buses. However, this is the first time that the effort is being made on such a large scale. Earlier in 2010, the transport department had introduced a few buses following Delhi High Court order, but most of them were discontinued following a bad response.

For Indian women in America, a sea of broken dreams

When Pavitra’s Delta Air Lines flight flew into Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on a crisp blue July morning back in 2008, her heart pounded with excitement. Though it was a dangerous time economically and few companies were hiring, her husband landed a good job with a major IT firm and was assigned to projects across the U.S.

Pavitra, who had a bachelor’s degree from India and some work experience, had made a careful plan to embark on a course of higher studies — permitted under her current H-4 visa — and then seek employment. It was all coming together for her, it seemed. But she was in for a rude shock.
